Apple develops, integrates, and supports macOS GPU drivers to ensure there are consistent GPU capabilities across all Mac products, including rich APIs like Metal, Core Animation, Core Image, and Core ML. To deliver the best possible customer experience, GPU drivers need to be engineered, integrated, tested, and delivered with each version of macOS. Aftermarket GPU drivers delivered by third parties are not compatible with macOS.

The GPU drivers delivered with macOS are also designed to enable a high-quality and high-performance experience when using an eGPU, as described in the list of recommended eGPU chassis and graphics card configurations below. On 24 May 2017, Intel announced that Thunderbolt 3 would become a royalty-free standard to OEMs and chip manufacturers in 2018, as part of an effort to boost the adoption of the protocol.[132] The Thunderbolt 3 specification was later released to the USB-IF on 4 March 2019, making it royalty-free, to be used to form USB4.[103][133][134] Intel says it will retain control over certification of all Thunderbolt 3 devices.[135] Intel also states it employs "mandatory certification for all Thunderbolt products".[136]
It also took some time for other storage manufacturers to release products: most were smaller devices aimed at the professional market, and focused on speed rather than high capacity. Many storage devices were under 1 TB in size, with some featuring SSDs for faster external-data access rather than standard hard-drives.
Other companies have offered interface products that can route multiple older, usually slower, connections through a single Thunderbolt port. In July 2011, Apple released its Apple Thunderbolt Display, whose gigabit Ethernet and other older connector types made it the first hub of its type. Later, companies such as Belkin, CalDigit, Other World Computing, Matrox, StarTech, and Elgato have all released Thunderbolt docks.
Backwards compatibility with non-Thunderbolt-equipped computers was a problem, as most storage devices featured only two Thunderbolt ports, for daisy-chaining up to six devices from each one. In mid-2012, LaCie, Drobo, and other device makers started to swap out one of the two Thunderbolt ports for a USB 3.0 connection on some of their low-to-mid end products. Later models had the USB 3.0 added in addition to the two Thunderbolt ports, including those from LaCie on their 2big range.
Thunderbolt 3 was introduced in late 2015, with several motherboard manufacturers and OEM laptop manufacturers including Thunderbolt 3 with their products. Gigabyte and MSI, large computer component manufacturers, entered the market for the first time with Thunderbolt 3 compatible components.[146][147]
These chassis got me thinking about the possibilities with thunderbolt. Now any iMac or MacBook can be as capable and expandable as a Mac Pro...there are even developments with video cards in one of these things! I do wonder if it would be possible to take a MacBook Air and hook up a thunderbolt PCIe chassis with a high end graphics card with the display on the internal monitor?

Failure to do so will make AJA devices fail to operate (Unsupported AJA Device).\r\n\r\n\u2022 Depending on your macOS version and AJA Desktop Software installation history, the following installation outcomes are possible:\r\n\r\n\u25e6 macOS Sierra and Earlier Supported Versions\r\n\r\n- No problems exist for AJA software installation or updates with these earlier versions of macOS.\r\n\r\n\u25e6 Earlier macOS to High Sierra Update\r\n\r\n- No problems should occur if the AJA Desktop Software package is already installed on macOS Sierra (or earlier) and then update your Mac to High Sierra. The identification of AJA as a trusted developer is \u201cgrandfathered in\u201d to High Sierra.\r\n\r\n\u25e6 macOS High Sierra First AJA Desktop Software Install\r\n\r\n- No problems should occur if your Mac is running High Sierra macOS, you install AJA Desktop Software for the first time, and you follow the instructions shown during installation (Figure 1).\r\n\r\n- Do NOT click OK (Figure 1).\u00a0\r\n\r\nFigure 1 \u2014 First-time installation on macOS High Sierra\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nInstead, click Open Security Preferences (or go to System Preferences>Security and Privacy) and then click Allow for AJA Video Systems (Figure 2).\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFigure 2 \u2014 click Allow for AJA Video Systems\u00a0\r\n\r\nNOTE: If after successful installation, you remove AJA applications from your computer using the AJA Uninstaller developer identification is retained by macOS High Sierra. Reinstallation should proceed without any problems. \r\n\r\n\u2022 Recovery from Installation Approval Failure:\r\n\r\n\u25e6 If you clicked OK during installation and skipped the developer approval step, the AJA Desktop Software installation will complete, but macOS\u2019 GateKeeper security will prevent AJA\u2019s device driver from loading, and AJA devices will not operate (Unsupported AJA Device).\r\n\r\n\u25e6 Apple has allowed a time window, within which you can belatedly approve a developer after installation. If you go to System Preferences>Security and Privacy, within 30 minutes of installation, the developer message and Allow button will be available for use. After 30 minutes, however, the message and button are removed from the window. Recovery from this involves uninstalling all AJA files (some manually), reinstalling the AJA Desktop Software package, and clicking on Allow for AJA Video Systems developer.\u00a0\r\n\r\n\u2022 Recovery from Installation Approval Failure (2nd Level if necessary)\r\n\r\n1. Run the AJA Uninstaller, located in the AJA Utilities folder in the Mac Applications folder.\r\n\r\n2. Access the Users Library, which is hidden. To access the library:\r\n\r\n3. Go to the Finder.\r\n\r\n- In the Finder Menu Bar and click on Go.\r\n\r\n- Hold down the Option key. The Library folder appears as long as the Option key is held down.\r\n\r\n- Go to Library>Preferences and delete all com.aja.*.* files. There may be one file or several files.\r\n\r\n4. Remove AJA Control Panel from the Dock, if applicable.\r\n\r\n5. Restart the Mac.\r\n\r\n6. Install the AJA Desktop Software package.\r\n\r\n7. During installation, click on Open Security Preferences (or go to System Preferences,>Security and Privacy).\r\n\r\n8. Under the General tab, click on the Allow button for AJA Video Systems.
